Thinking of snapping up a bargain at the end of year car sales or want to have your new car serviced for the holidays? Here is some sound advice from Towers Automotive in Charters Towers. Getting a new car is one of the most considerable investments many people make, so it is sensible to do your utmost to take care of it. Caring for your new car goes beyond detailing the interior and keeping it sparkling with a loving weekly wash, however. There are a few other things to consider, such as who is the best choice to service your car. You will want to ensure it is regularly serviced by a qualified professional, to the manufacturers requirements, using high quality parts from a reputable supplier and fluids which meet the manufacturers specifications. This is not just to look after your new car, but because if these four requirements are met you will also preserve the manufacturers warranty. Did you know that you have the right to decide who will service your new car without voiding either the manufacturers warranty or your rights under the Consumer Guarantee You are not required to take the vehicle back to the dealer where you originally got it for service or repairs. Provided the work is conducted, according to the manufacturers specifications, by an adequately trained person and uses sufficient quality parts and fluids, the warranty stands. You have the right to choose who services your car. With Repco Authorised Service you can tick all the boxes. If you already own a new car or are thinking of purchasing one, make sure you clearly understand where your statutory rights begin and end Make sure you are aware of the distinction between extended, statutory and manufacturer warranties to help you make the right choices when it comes to servicing your new car. You are automatically covered by a statutory warranty, also known as a Consumer Guarantee, under Australian Consumer Law (ACL) and this statutory protection can never be outweighed by manufacturer or express warranties (which are offered by the car maker and car dealer respectively). A lack of disclosure requirements on car dealers at the point of sale regarding these contracts can easily lead the consumer into making a choice to be bound by a long term contract without access to all of the details needed to make a properly informed decision. So when purchasing your new car, be wary of new car dealers who may try to pad the deal with “express” or “extended” warranties, often for free. Generally these ‘special' warranties may include quite specialised restrictions or provisions, often in a language that is difficult to follow. Many times these promises provide very few additional benefits which exceed the consumer's basic statutory rights and can tie the unwary buyer into a long term agreement with a specific car dealer. Such promises are very unlikely to call to your notice the potential negative aspects involved with taking a new car back to the dealer for service or repair. This includes what sort of travel time you may need to get your car serviced or longer waiting times due to fewer available service locations or mechanics. New car service FAQ's What is a consumer guarantee? Under Australian Consumer Law (ACL), you are protected by a Consumer Guarantee which takes into account purchase price, realistic expectations of when a failure might occur, advertising claims and the conditions under which a vehicle should operate. Previously known as a Statutory Warranty, the Consumer Guarantee does not have a specific time limit associated with it nor can it ever be replaced by a manufacturers warranty, which is in addition to the Consumer Guarantee. What is a manufacturers warranty? Manufacturers warranties are essentially a promise to the buyer that the new vehicle will be free from defects for a specific time and that any such defects will entitle buyers to a repair or other compensation. According to the Competition and Consumer Act (2010), such warranties cannot state that a vehicle MUST be returned to an authorised dealer for servicing What is an express or extended warranty? Often new car dealers will try to include "express" or "extended" warranties, sometimes for free, in the purchase of your new vehicle. These ‘extra' warranties are in addition to the manufacturers warranty and may include quite specific restrictions or provisions, usually in unclear or confusing language. Many of these contracts actually provide little or no additional benefits over and above the consumer's basic statutory rights and can tie the unwary buyer into a long term agreement with a specific car dealership. Extended warranties can (and often do) restrict you to a specific dealership, which can have its drawbacks. Can Towers Automotive service my new car without voiding the warranty? There is NO requirement to service your car at a manufacturer's dealership to preserve; Any manufacturer's warranty (that may apply to your vehicle).  Any state or territory based statutory warranty (that may apply to your vehicle).  Your rights to Consumer Guarantees (formerly known as implied statutory warranties).  What steps will Towers Automotive take to protect my warranty? Towers Automotive are fully qualified to carry out log book servicing and we ensure all work is performed according to the manufacturer's specifications, using appropriate quality parts, fluids and lubricants where required, meaning the manufacturers warranty remains intact. In addition, all work carried out by Towers Automotive is backed by the Repco Authorised Service Nationwide Warranty. Can Towers Automotive stamp my logbook ? Towers Automotive can and WILL stamp your log book to verify the work has been conducted by fully qualified staff according to manufacturer's specifications, using appropriate quality parts, fluids & lubricants. Will having my car serviced with Towers Automotive help maintain the value? It goes without saying that a vehicle which has been well taken care of will maintain its value better than a poorly maintained one. Proof of a regular, properly adhered to service schedule will add further supporting evidence the car is in good condition. In addition to maintaining your warranty with correct service procedures, Towers Automotive will stamp your log book, which can prove invaluable should you ever decide to sell the car. What about extended warranty or specific ‘service plans'? Motor vehicle dealers sometimes offer their own extended (or express) warranties on vehicles. These extra warranties often begin after the manufacturer's warranty and may stipulate that the vehicle must be serviced by the actual dealer offering the warranty. They are generally within their right to impose this condition, but the buyer should beware, such warranties are not always what they seem. Bon Voyage Repco Retrialers Bright and early on an August Sunday morning we headed down to Lissner Park in the middle of Charters Towers to say bon voyage to the Repco Reliability Retrial Participants who had an overnight stay in Charters Towers on their epic Around Australia Adventure. The Re-Trial is the 40th Anniversary of the original 1979 version of the event. All vehicles entered are at least 40 years old - with one even being 90 years old - making their way around Australia in 28 days.  The Park was still a little foggy and the flying foxes were serenading us (I guess you can call their screaching that) when the cars lined up for the monring briefing before heading up towards Greenvale on the Gregory Devleopment Highway, before stopping at Ravenshoe for lunch, then down the Gilies Range (hopefully keeping down their lunches) to arrive in Cairns. Unfortuntately Entrant #29, known as "Floris" the 1959 Riley 1.5, had an issue with its Carby and was carried back to The Towers for some repairs. Many thanks and congratulations to Todd Martin and his team who spoke to us over 2 years ago at the Charters Towers Motor Show and Swap Meet with the initial idea of this event

A Win For Consumers! In a recent finding from the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission), a dealer (which one is not of major importance) was found to have misrepresented to its customers that manufacturing faults may not be rectified because of non-dealership servicing, and that any rectification offered was from "goodwill" rather than admission of fault. This is something we have seen specifically within our Workshop within the last 12-months. This is more proof that you cannot have your manufacturers statutory warranty voided by having your vehicle serviced by an independent repairer. Its your car - and it's your choice! Read an excerpt from the statement issued by the ACCC below (dealership name has been removed); [The Dealer] acknowledged that it misrepresented to some consumers that it had discretion to decide whether the vehicle owner would be offered a refund, repair or replacement for a car with a manufacturing fault, and that any remedy was a goodwill gesture, - ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said. [The Dealer] also accepted that some consumers were told that a remedy would not be provided because the vehicle had not been serviced by [the] dealer or with sufficient regularity, or as the vehicle was purchased second hand. The Australian Consumer Law includes consumer guarantees that provide remedies for major and minor faults in motor vehicles. The consumer guarantees operate separately to the manufacturer's warranty, and cannot be modified to require consumers to have their vehicles serviced by authorised dealers in order to obtain a remedy, - Mr Sims said. [The Dealer] accepted that its conduct is likely to have contravened the consumer law....." The Australian Consumer Law provides comprehensive protections for buyers, ensuring they receive fair treatment and recourse when purchasing motor vehicles. These protections, known as consumer guarantees, address both significant and minor issues that may arise with a vehicle. Notably, these guarantees function independently of any warranties provided by the manufacturer.  This means that even if the manufacturer's warranty imposes certain conditions, such as requiring maintenance only at authorised dealerships, these stipulations cannot override the consumer's rights under the law. Consequently, consumers retain the ability to seek resolutions for faults regardless of where their vehicle has been serviced, offering them greater flexibility and assurance in the maintenance and repair of their vehicles.
