Safety Certificate Inspections (previously known as Roadworthy Certificates, or RWC) are required by Queensland Transport to ensure the safety of all vehicles on Queensland roads. Find out what many of our customers have asked us over the years...

What is a safety certificate?

A Safety Certificate is an inspection carried out by an Approved Examiner, certified by Queensland Transport as being able to correctly interpret the guidelines to ensure your vehicle is safe for operating use.

When do I need to have a safety certificate?

In Queensland, you are required to obtain a Safety Certificate when registering a new vehicle, or when changing the regsitered owners of a vehicle.

Recently, the Department of Transport changed it's regulations stating that you had to have a Safety Certificate BEFORE offering a vehicle for sale.

Now you can advertise a vehicle for sale without a Certificate but must have one before completion of the sale.

We strongly recommend if you are selling a vehicle to have your vehicle inspected BEFORE offering for sale, as you may not be aware of the extent - and cost - of required repairs before you've set and agreed on a selling price.

What can a safety certificate be used for?

Safety Certificates can be used to buy, sell or transfer vehicle's ownership. This applies to cars, truck, caravans and trailers.

If you own a vehicle that requires a Certificate Of Inspection (COI) you will have to present your vehicle to an Approved Inspection Station either annually or every second year to renew your registration. These are usually vehicle's over 4.5 tonne in certain circumstances.

What's the difference between a Safety Certificate and Roadworthy Certificate?

With regard to cars and light vehicles, there is no difference. In Queensland Roadworthy Certificates have been known as Safety Certificates since 1999. Inspections for trucks over 4.5 tonne (4,500gvm) are still known as Roadworthy Certificates in QLD.

How much will a Safety Certificate (RWC) cost?

Our pricing changes in line with Queensland Transport fees annually. There are also different prices for light vehicles, light and heavy trailers, and trucks. Please contact the office for the current price list.

How long will a Safety Certificate (RWC) take?

An inspection can take up to an hour or two, plus paperwork processing. We usually request that we have the vehicle for at least this amount of time.

Can you inspect Buses or Taxis?

Yes we can. We have recently upgraded to a CL inspection type which covers Public Passenger Vehicles, Not For Profit and School Passenger Carrying Vehicles up to 4.5 tonne GVM.

Do I need a Safety Certificate for my trailer or caravan?

Yes, if your caravan or trailer is over 750kg ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass).

If your trailer has a plumbed gas system you will also be required to have a current Gas Certificate.

In certain circumstances your trailer will require an inspection (COI) to renew registration as well.

Do I need to be present for you to do the inspection?

We can always give customers a lift home or elsewhere whilst the inspection is taking place as we prefer customers not to wait whilst the inspections are taking place.

How long is a Safety Certificate valid for?

After a failed initial inspection, items that require repair to pass the Inspection must be repaired and reinspected within fourteen (14) days or 1000km whichever comes first.

Once this passes, or if the inspection passes on the first go, the Safety Certificate is valid for 2 months or 2000km whichever comes first.

Inspections outside these guidelines are considered a new inspection and fees will be payable again.

Where Should I Display My Safety Certificate?

There is no requirement to display your Safety Certificate. Using the Rego Search function with Queensland Transport will show the Safety Certificate Number and issue date online as we issue Electronic Safety Certificates.

What happens if my car fails the first inspection?

We can provide an estimate to undertake the repairs to pass the Inspection on request. Customers are always welcome to take their vehicle home or back to their usual mechanic to be repaired and represented with all repairs completed within fourteen (14) days or 1000km whichever comes first.

If my vehicle requires mechanical work to pass, can you do it for me?

Absolutely. We are happy to provide an estimate for the repairs on request. This also ensures that the standard of repair required by the inspector who failed the items is met.

My vehicle is unregistered, is that ok?

Yes, however we are required by Queensland Transport to road-test vehicles. We ask that customers obtain, and provide receipt for their Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance before presenting unregistered vehicles for inspection. Unregistered vehicles with proof of CTP Insurance can be driven in the most direct route from a residence to the Approved Inspection Station with number plates removed. Trailers and Caravans do not have to have CTP insurance before presentation. If you're moving a vehicle further than the city limits of Charters Towers, check with Queensland Transport if a Permit is required.

Do you perform HVRAS Inspections?

Yes. We inspect registered trucks up to 16 tonne GVM and Trailers up to 10 tonne. We do have exceptions and additions for first-time registrations so please call the office to enquire.

What is a HVRAS and when do I need one?

HVRAS inspections are required for new registrations or for Certificate Of Inspections due as intervals as determined by Queensland Transport to continue registration of heavy vehicles. Inspection intervals are issued by Queensland Transport and are either annually or every second year if classed as Primary Producer.

Do you do Modification Inspections & Mod plates?

Yes - we have licence to issue a number of Modification Plates. Please call the office to discuss.
